Ladakh has been the favorite climbing spot of the British, Australian, German, Japanese and many other climbing team of the world. Many world famous expeditions has been carried out in the last three decades, since it opened for tourist in 1974. Most of the expeditions has been carried out joint with the Indian Army in the beginning, and slowly individuals and other teams came to Ladakh for climbing.
The expedition-grade and tougher climbing is the Nun-Kun massif in the Great Himalayan range which has been more frequented. As the easy accessibility and short distance from the Kargil Padum road many trekkers included the peaks in their trek. Among its six known peaks accessible from the Suru Valley, Nun (7,135m) and Kun (7,077m ) are the highest summits.
