       Climbing at Hampi (Karnatka)

Travel to Hampi if you are looking for an exciting rock climbing experience. Few places in the world are as richly endowed as Hampi. Hampi is situated on the north-eastern part of Karnataka and is nearly 300kms from Bangalore.

Easily accessible by road and rail, Hampi was the capital of the Vijaynagar Kingdom which ruled the Deccan plateau during 13th to 16th century AD. The ruins of Hampi reveal the magnificence of a great city and a great empire. Hampi has been declared as UNESCO heritage city.

Lots of rocks, boulders form the geography of this area. Rock climbing is the main adventure activity here. Weather here is usually hot and dry. The entire visible landscape is covered with boulders or crags, the task of exploration is mind boggling. The best thing to do is to go rock climbing. As soon as you arrive it will become clear that there is no shortage of rocks within walking distance.

The Hemakuta Hill is an easy first stop, being only 2 minutes walk from Hampi Bazaar. On a big shield of bare rock overlooking Virupaksha temple are deposited many pleasantly featured boulders. Most of these are climbable, mainly slabs and walls with a few steeper problems up slightly creaky flakes. This is a fantastic place for rock climbing and also watch the sunset.

The Matanga Hill rewards you with excellent rock climbing opportunities. The climbing potentials are not as great as Hemakuta Hill, but compensated for by the tremendous views. The best approach is up the steepest path form the Eastern end of Hampi Bazaar.
