Bactrian Camel Safari In Nubra Valley

Introduction

150 Km from Leh Nubra Valley lies north of Leh close to the Siachen glacier world’s highest battle field. About 6 hrs of hill drive from Leh over the World’s highest motorable road at Khardung La pass (18,350 Ft) lies this beautiful valley true to its name “Nubra” means “valley of flowers” as it is the most green area in Ladakh. The main villages are Deskit, Hunder, Sumur and Panamik. Panamik is famous for its hot springs which acclaims of its medicinal properties while Hunder and Deskit are famous for its ancient monasteries on the hill top.

Hunder is one of the most beautiful place on the planet where small desert with sand-dunes with its famous Bactrian camels can be seen. These Bactrian camels has amazing history to be found here at this unlikely place. Once the valley of Nubra was part of the famous “Silk Route”; the ancient trade route spread throughout the Asia. The traders from China, Mongolia, Afghanistan etc traveled with caravans carrying Salt, spices, herbs, Narcotics, Gold, Silver, carpets and silk through this route. These Bactrian camels which are double hump are supposed to be either from Mongolia or China. Once the trade was stopped these camels were left here and the local breaded them for carriage etc.

These camels are fit for this region as they are unusually capable of drinking up to 120 liters of water at a time. In Nubra this is usually in the form of ice or snow eaten in small but frequent amounts.  Their mouths are extremely tough, allowing them to eat thorny desert plants.

These group of camels are very moody and sentimental about their home place, many people tried to take them to other regions of Ladakh but they were very sad and will refuse to eat. Once they were taken back to Nubra valley they were very happy and healthy as usual.

Today one can enjoy the camel safari on these 7 feet high and above 700 kg in weight gentle creature.

Camel Safari in Nubra valley can be done from 2 hours to 5 hours village to village. Packed lunch can be enjoyed on the way and one can truly be with the nature in these valley with orchids, plants river and san dunes surrounded by the mighty mountains.
